The "Mausgruppe" in Kyoto is a non-profit private initiative of German parents to cultivate the German language abilities of (their) children. Confidence is regarded to be the key for children to use and utilize German in a non German environment. Since Japanese is the overwhelming language (of course..) German is only to be heard inside the family used by (one of) the parents.
In our meetings we try to overcome this situation and give a chance to experience German as normal means of communication. We also encourage parents to exchange information on how to deal with a situation trying to raise kids in a multicutural background.
For the younger children we have a Playgroup (3-6 years), where we meet regularly to play games, sing songs and make German related crafts such as pictures, lanterns, et cetera.
Starting from September we will also start a Kids group (6-12years) for the older children where we will try to teach reading and writing in a rather playful way.
If there is interest in forming a toddlers group there would be some possibility in the EFK where we are seated at the moment.
To take part basic knowledge of German is inevitable. Most of the children have a multinational
background and have one German speaking parent. We do welcome children from Japanese families who lived in Germany for some time. Temporary members from Germany who are based in Kyoto for a shorter period of time are also most welcome.
